If you have been following my blog, you would already know that I am a big fan of dry spices. The truth is that for Chinese cooking, you only need quite a few spices and I have already written about it here.

However I have a serious obsession over spices. When I shop for spices, I am like a kid in a candy store and I always up end buying some exotic spices that I would only use for once and forget about it. So if you are new to spices, I would suggest you sticking with a set of quality common spices and slowly expand outside as you explore different types of cuisines.

  74. 60

So many spices – so little time. My favorites, not necessarily together:

Turmeric, which I put on everything – tortillas, oatmeal, soup, fruit, even fabric (I wear, don’t eat, the fabric!). Gorgeous dark orange color, and so healthy!

Garlic, on almost everything, but especially with peanut butter and avocado.

And a whole bunch of spices in a sweet coconut milk fruit drink, including cardamon, ginger, clove, cayenne pepper, and always, always turmeric.

Basil for making Italian dishes i.e. homemade pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, etc.
Cinnamon for adding to some of my green smoothies or for making sweets for kids.
Chinese 5 spices makes my mouth watering just thinking about it. Taiwanese pork chop, tea eggs, pork feet, etc.

  115. 15

My favorite spice is cinnamon, and I use it in baking all the time (french toast, muffins, cookies, etc). It also makes the house smell absolutely wonderful.
