Last week, after I mentioned about what happened to the pot of basil I kept outside of my window, I have received many comments from you awesome readers. Thank you very much for all your kind words and suggestions.

I fixed up the soil in the pot and took the pot indoor after the incident. After one week of caring and monitoring, I am happy to announce that the basil has revived! It is now sitting safely on my kitchen windowsill joined by a pot of rosemary, a pot of mint , and a pot of key lime tree which we seeded over a year ago using the seeds from the key lime used to make this cake.

As the summer is about to heat up I figure it’d be a good idea to post some of my favorite summer drink recipes. To kick off this series, I am going to share a delicious avocado shake (and I know what you are thinking right now but trust me you’ll love it!)

The creamy and buttery texture in avocado makes it easily a favorite meat substitutes in vegetarian dishes. Not to mention that avocado is thought as one of healthiest fruits you might find with nearly 20 essential nutrients including fiber, potassium, and Vitamin E, and monounsaturated fat that can lower cholesterol level.

Since my introduction to avocado at my first Japanese sushi experience, I’ve come to love this fruit and dishes such as avocado salad and guacamole. As strange as it might sound to us who are used to savory avocado dishes, avocado is also widely used in sweet dishes.

Avocado Shake

During my visit to a Southeastern Asian restaurant a few years ago, I ordered this avocado shake out of curiosity and I was totally blown away by it! I know you might think this is disgusting but trust me it is so good that once you have your first sip you’ll never stop! I don’t know what it is but combination of avocado’s richness and sweet condensed milk is just out of this world. It’s like drinking a freshly made soft ice cream except this shake is way better!!

Ever since then the avocado shake has become one of my summer favorite. I hope you’ll also enjoy this delicious and refreshing shake!

Cut open avocado from the middle. Scope out the flesh and slice it.

    Hi Yi,
I absolutely looove the avocado shakes I used to get from the Vietnamese bakery by my house. So I’m definitely going to try this recipe out. Unfortunately, it’ll have to be on a “cheat” day since a serving of avocado is only about a 1/5 of the actual avocado. Even though it’s jammed packed with nutrients, a whole avocado alone could rack up to about 250 calories depending on size, add that to the sweetened condensed milk and you’re looking at a 500+ calorie drink. Didn’t wanna be a downer, but thought maybe there are people who might want to know in case they were also watching their fat and calorie intake.

Yi, this sounds very much like avocado juice in Indonesia, and I bet tastes just as yummy. Yup, people do raise their eyebrows when the said juice arrives in their table, it is super thick! It makes me think that we should just ditch the “juice” and change it to “shake”, so much more appropriate 😀

condensed milk sounds delicious! I regularly make avocado, banana and apple juice smoothies with a dash of maple syrup for sweetness, it tastes way too good for something so healthy!

What a healthy shake! I actually never heard of shake that has avocado in it! I’m very very intrigued! California is easy to get avocado and we can enjoy this for pretty long time. Beautiful presentation!

This is a great recipe for a day like today. Are you kidding me with this heat wave?! I will need to substitute the dairy for soy ice cream, but I’m sure it will be delicious. Can’t wait to try!

I love avocado shake…this is how we used to eat avocado back in Brazil…sweet. I just learned to have avocado in savory dish after moving to US…I love that you used condensed milk…can never go wrong with it.
Thanks for reminded me of this delicious shake.
Hope you are enjoying your week Yi 🙂

I still have 3 avocados sitting in the fridge for more than a week, waiting to ripen. Your avocado shake looks luxuriously rich and creamy =)

How lovely is it to have fresh herbs so handy; they just add life to our foods, even a little garnish over a drink.

Hey great to know that your basil plant is in its form again!! Don’t we develop a kind of bonding with the plants? Your avocado shake is so creamy and looks fabulous.

Glad to hear your basil plant has revived! Tragedy averted! And I must admit I was thinking “that” when I read you were doing an avocado shake! I’ve never had avocado in a sweet dish before, but now you have me intrigued. Sounds really delish. Thanks for this.

I love avocado, its buttery richness and I often use it in things that require some sort of creamy base, like this delish milkshake you’ve shown, or as a healtheir dip 😉
